Lung cancer: Have you had a new cough for longer than two weeks? That is a sign - Express

Image
Cancer Research says that the most common symptoms of lung cancer are having a cough most of the time, having a change in a cough you have had for a long time, and chest infections that keep coming back or a chest infection that doesn't get better. The charity adds that losing your appetite, feeling tired all the time, and losing weight are all signs. "A cough is also a symptom of coronavirus. It is still important to contact your GP if you have a new or worsening cough. "They can speak to you over the phone or by a video call and arrange for tests if you need them," the charity notes.

Examining the Impact of Tislelizumab Added to Chemotherapy on HRQoL Outcomes in Previously Untreated nSQ-NSCLC Patients - Physician's Weekly

Image
For a study, the researchers sought to compare the effects of tislelizumab, a programmed cell death protein 1 inhibitor, combined with chemotherapy to chemotherapy alone as the first-line treatment in patients with advanced nonsquamous non–small cell lung cancer (nSQ-NSCLC). Patients with histologically proven stage IIIB/IV nSQ-NSCLC were randomised 2:1 to tislelizumab plus platinum-pemetrexed (arm T + PP) or platinum-pemetrexed alone (arm PP) in the randomised, open-label, multicenter phase III trial RATIONALE 304 (NCT03663205). The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 questions and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire–Lung Cancer were used to assess health-related QoL. Mean score change from baseline in the 30-item Quality of Life Questionnaire Core's global health status/quality of life (GHS/QoL) at weeks 12 (during chemotherapy) and 18 (after chemotherapy) were ke

Papillary urothelial carcinoma: Treatment and outlook - Medical News Today

Image
Papillary urothelial carcinoma is a form of bladder cancer. It develops within a type of cell in the inner lining of the bladder, ureters, and lower kidneys. The bladder is a muscular organ in the pelvis that stores urine. Bladder cancer develops when abnormal cells in the bladder grow too quickly. Papillary urothelial carcinoma is often slow growing , and it can be easier to treat than other types of bladder cancer. The prognosis is generally good. A person who receives a diagnosis of bladder cancer in the earliest stage, before it has started to spread, has a 95% chance of living for at least another 5 years. In this article, we investigate the symptoms, causes, and treatment options for papillary urothelial carcinoma. Share on Pinterest Papillary urothelial carcinoma is often easier to treat than other types of bladder cancer. Bladder cancer can develop in any layer of the bladder walls. Papillary urothelial carcinoma begins by affecting the urothelial cells within the bladder or

Artificial intelligence helps physicians better assess the effectiveness of bladder cancer treatment - Science Daily

Image
In a small but multi-institutional study, an artificial intelligence-based system improved providers' assessments of whether patients with bladder cancer had complete response to chemotherapy before a radical cystectomy (bladder removal surgery). Yet the researchers caution that AI isn't a replacement for human expertise and that their tool shouldn't be used as such. "If you use the tool smartly, it can help you," said Lubomir Hadjiyski, Ph.D., a professor of radiology at the University of Michigan Medical School and the senior author of the study. When patients develop bladder cancer, surgeons often remove the entire bladder in an effort to keep the cancer from returning or spreading to other organs or areas. More evidence is building, though, that surgery may not be necessary if a patient has zero evidence of disease after chemotherapy. However, it's difficult to determine whether the lesion left after treatment is simply tissue that's become nec

Lung cancer recurrence: Types, signs, likelihood, and treatment - Medical News Today

Image
Lung cancer recurrence occurs when doctors detect lung cancer after a period of the disease being undetectable. It means that the cancer has come back after treatment that was successful in the short term. The cancer recurrence rate is different for small cell and non-small cell lung cancers, and the chances of recurrence depend on various factors. Although different treatments can eliminate the cancer cells in someone's lungs, even successful lung cancer treatments cannot guarantee a permanent cure. This article provides a detailed look at the science of lung cancer recurrence, including the types, signs, likelihood, causes, and risk factors. It also discusses the treatment for lung cancer and the support options and outlook for people living with the disease. The American Cancer Society (ACS) defines recurrent cancer as cancer that doctors find after treatment and after a period during which there were no detectable signs of cancer. There are three main types of cancer recurrenc

Imfinzi May Be Better in a Combination for Advanced Lung Cancer - Curetoday.com

Image
Imfinzi combined with either oleclumab or monalizumab improved objective response rates (the rate of measurable tumor shrinkage as a result of treatment) and progression-free survival (average time from treatment until disease progression) in patients with unresectable, stage 3 non-small cell lung cancer. Additionally, no new side effects were observed compared with the standard of care, Imfinzi alone, according to recent phase 2 study results. Imfinzi alone has been shown to improve overall survival and is already standard of care when treating patients with unresectable stage 3 non-small cell lung cancer. "Despite progression, additional work remains to further improve outcomes for this patient population," the authors wrote in the study, which was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology . "Therefore, immunotherapy combination strategies that build upon the (Imfinzi) standard of care are being explored to expand the number of patients who respond and remain progr

Rush Limbaugh says his stage 4 lung cancer has progressed 'in the wrong direction' - USA TODAY

Image
Show Caption Hide Caption Rush Limbaugh diagnosed with advanced lung cancer Conservative radio commentator Rush Limbaugh revealed he was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer at the end of his show. USA TODAY Rush Limbaugh's stage 4 lung cancer has progressed "in the wrong direction," the conservative commentator and radio host announced.  More than eight months after revealing his diagnosis, Limbaugh, 69, said Monday on his radio show that his new health developments weren't "dramatic," but had nevertheless recently worsened. "The idea now is to keep it where it is or maybe have it reduce again," he said, according to a transcript on his website. "We've shown that that is possible. If it happened once, it can happen again. So that's the objective of the current treatment plan." Limbaugh announced in earl

Sequencing Osimertinib in Patients With EGFR-Mutated NSCLC - Targeted Oncology

Image
Aparna Hegde, MD, assistant professor of hematology/oncology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, discusses the decision to use osimertinib (Tagrisso) in the frontline setting for treating patients with non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have EGFR mutations. Hegde's decision is based off results from the phase 3 FLAURA trial (NCT02296125) that compared osimertinib in the frontline setting against older EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and found osimertinib to be superior. Progression-free survival (PFS) was significantly longer for patients on osimertinib at 18.9 months compared with 10.2 months in the TKI group (HR, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.37-0.57; P < .001). Median duration of response was also longer in the osimertinib group at 17.2 months (95% CI, 13.8-22.0) with osimertinib vs 8.5 months (95% CI, 7.3-9.8) with standard EGFR TKIs. Moreover, recent results have shown an overall survival (OS) rate of 38.6% (95% CI, 34.5%- 41.8%) with osimertinib in this patient

"Medical Journeys" chart a path each step of the way for physicians and patients and provide continual resources and support, as the caregiver team navigates the course of a disease. Melanoma is the rarest of all skin cancers but paradoxically the deadliest, accounting for about 1% of all new cases of skin cancer in the U.S. but more than 80% of the deaths. About 100,000 new melanoma diagnoses will occur in the U.S. during 2022, with a predominance in men (57,000 vs 42,000 for women). An estimated 7,650 people will die of melanoma this year: 5,080 men and 2,570 women

Lung Cancer Progression: Stages, Treatment, & Prognosis - Verywell Health

Image
Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer in men and women around the world, with an estimated 228,820 new cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year. About 85% of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking. Smoking cannabis, air pollution, exposure to toxins (e.g., asbestos, radon) and second-hand smoke can also lead to lung cancer. Symptoms of lung cancer may include cough, chest pain, fatigue, hoarse voice, trouble breathing, weight loss, and wheezing. Many individuals with lung cancer do not show any symptoms until the cancer has spread ( metastasized ) into other parts of the body.  Tumors located in the lungs can be detected through the use of imaging scans (e.g., chest X-rays, CT scan) and a diagnosis can be confirmed through a biopsy. Treatment options vary depending on the type and stage of the disease and may include chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, or a combination. This article discusses the stages of cancer, the ways in which cancer progresse

Moving transperineal prostate biopsy into the clinic - Urology Times

Image
The diagnosis and management of prostate cancer remains a large part of virtually all urology practices. Prostate-specific antigen screening dramatically increased the number of men presenting with suspicion for prostate cancer, and transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)-guided prostate biopsy became routinely performed in our clinics. 1,2 Over the past decade, it became clear that the diagnosis of clinically significant prostate cancer should be prioritized, as well as the development and implementation of fluid-based biomarkers, and prostate imaging with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) currently allows for a reduction in unnecessary prostate biopsies (those diagnosing stage I prostate cancer or not identifying disease). 3-5 Moreover, biopsies informed by MRI can increase the detection of clinically significant disease and reduce the need for repeat procedures. 6 Currently, most TRUS-guided prostate biopsies performed in the United States sample the prostate using a transrectal approach.
