The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States. It is also one of the leading causes of cancer deaths globally, according to Mayo Clinic. The second most common form of cancer is skin cancer. Breast cancer for women and prostate cancer for men after that.
There are two types of lung cancer - small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. Non-small cell lung cancer is more common.
Lung cancer is a disease where malignant cancer cells form in lung tissue, according to the National Cancer Institute.
"Big Bang Theory" star Kate Micucci revealed she underwent surgery recently for lung cancer on TikTok, according to CNN. Micucci said her diagnosis was not something she had expected.
"Hey everybody, this is not a TikTok, it's a 'Sick Tok,'" she said. "I'm in the hospital but it's because I had lung cancer surgery yesterday. They caught it really early."
"It's really weird, because I've never smoked a cigarette in my life. So, you know, it was a surprise. But also I guess, it happens and the greatest news is they caught it early, they got it out, I'm all good," Micucci said, according to CNN.
"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" actor Andrew Braugher died at the age of 61 on Dec. 11, according to Variety. The cause at the time was a "brief illness."
Braugher's publicist said his cause of death was lung cancer, according to the New York Times. He was diagnosed a few months ago.
According to the National Library of Medicine, other famous names who died from the disease include Walt Disney, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnez Humphrey Bogart and many others.
Causes of lung cancer, according to the CDC:The number one cause of lung cancer is cigarette smoking, the CDC said. It can also come from tobacco, breathing secondhand smoke, substance exposure like asbestos, certain gene mutations or family history.
"Lung cancer can happen in people who never smoked or smoked fewer than 100 cigarettes in their lifetime," the CDC said.
Symptoms, according to the CDC:New Technology Transforming Lung Cancer Diagnosis
FORT MYERS, Fla. — What started as a routine test, turned into a major diagnosis for Cindy McClure.
"We discussed various tests that in my age group, risk factors that would be covered by Medicare. I'm a former smoker," McClure said. "I have quite a history of cancer on my father's side of the family. Three of the four siblings died from cancer, including my father."
The tests revealed cancerous tissue on her right lung despite her never showing any strong symptoms.
"Honestly I was so healthy otherwise, I don't know if it was denial or what," she said. "After that came back showing something, I was referred to Dr. Kapadia who then set me up to have the biopsy here, which did confirm that it was malignant. So that's what got me started on this journey."
Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and the deadliest cancer in Lee County, according to Lee Health.
Scientists have created a new way to find, remove and diagnose potentially cancerous tissue.
"The new technology's called Ion Bronchoscopy," Dr. Shyam Kapadia said. "The new technology is a robotic platform that allows us to reach parts of the lung that we've never been able to reach before."
Dr. Kapadia started using Ion bronchoscopy at Lee Health last year. The technology uses a patient's scans to map out a path to all of the cancerous tissue, allowing doctors to send a camera through the throat to the lungs.
"This is like outer space for us pulmonologists because we haven't been to these parts of the lung before, and a lot of the lung cancers that we find are in these parts of the lung," Kapadia said. "So now that we can biopsy them, we can find earlier stage lung cancer — again, things that we weren't able to do ten years ago."
Doctors were able to catch McClure's cancer early and remove it completely by taking out 30 percent of her right lung.
"I need no chemo, I need no radiation," McClure said. "I of course will have regular checks to make sure that there's nothing else going on, but I'm good to go."
Only a few medical facilities in Southwest Florida offer Ion bronchoscopies. Doctors say this new way of testing can be life-saving, with a lower risk of complications, and can help patients breathe a little easier.
"The technology is available for a reason," McClure said. "Use it. Because I'm pretty sure at this point, at least for the time being, it saved my life."
