American Lung Association Uncovers Stark Differences In Lung Cancer Survival, Screening And Treatment Across States

A new report from the American Lung Association reveals both progress and persistent challenges in the fight against lung cancer, which remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.

The "State of Lung Cancer" report, released Tuesday, shows a significant 26% improvement in survival rates over the past five years. However, the current five-year survival rate stands at just 28%, highlighting the continued severity of the disease.

Early detection remains crucial, with patients diagnosed in early stages seeing their survival chances soar to 64%. Unfortunately, more than 4 in 10 cases aren't caught until late stages, when survival rates drop to 9%. Despite this stark contrast, only 16% of eligible Americans underwent lung cancer screening in 2023, with rates varying dramatically by state — from a high of 28.6% in Rhode Island to just 9% in Wyoming.

The report identifies a critical gap in access to advanced diagnostic tools. Biomarker testing, which analyzes tumor DNA to guide treatment decisions, remains inconsistently covered by insurance across the country. Only 15 states currently mandate comprehensive coverage for this testing, while 30 states and Washington, DC, have no requirements in place.

Healthcare disparities continue to affect outcomes significantly. The report found that people of color consistently face worse outcomes across multiple metrics, including early diagnosis rates, survival rates and access to surgical treatment.

The American Lung Association is calling for nationwide policy changes, including universal insurance coverage for biomarker testing and passage of the Increasing Access to Lung Cancer Screening Act (HR 4286).

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Recurring respiratory infections, such as pneumonia
  • The sudden development of wheezing

    For patients already diagnosed with lung cancer, comprehensive biomarker testing is a critical step in precision medicine, ensuring that each patient receives a tailored treatment plan matched to their unique biomarker profile, maximizing the potential for effective outcomes at the optimal moment.

  • Tissue Biopsies: Tissue collection techniques include bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, mediastinoscopy, etc. Once the tumor tissue is collected, it is forwarded to a laboratory for analysis, with the goal of conducting thorough biomarker testing.
  • Liquid Biopsies: A blood sample is analyzed in the laboratory for the presence of driver mutations.
