How to live longer - the one fruit you should eat every day to prevent lung cancer - Express

You could lower your risk of early death by eating a healthy, balanced diet, including at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, said the NHS.

Regular exercise is also crucial for boosting your lifespan. Everyone should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity every week.

Making some small dietary changes could also help to increase your life expectancy.

You could lower your chances of developing lung cancer by eating more avocado, it’s been claimed.

Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers to be diagnosed in the UK, with around 45,000 new cases every year.

Avocado, which is rich in vitamin E, could help to slash your risk of the disease, according to dietitian Juliette Kellow and nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer.

The vitamin helps to keep the lungs healthy, and avocado is one of the best sources of the nutrient, they said.

“The lungs and respiratory tract respond well to support from nutrition,” they said in their book, ‘Eat Better Live Longer - Understand What Your Body Needs To Stay Healthy’.

“In fact, eating across a rainbow will give your body plenty of the nutrients it needs to promote good lung health.

“Avocados are rich in vitamin E, a nutrient that keeps the the lungs healthy.

“They are also packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals that help with everything from keeping eyes healthy to regulating blood pressure.

“Eat half an avocado three to four times a week. Although avocados have many health benefits, remember that they are high in calories.”

Adding just 2mg of vitamin E to your diet every day could lower your chances of lung cancer by as much as five per cent, they added.

A single small avocado provides around 3.2mg of vitamin E.

Vitamin E is also great for the skin, as it helps to reduce wrinkles, the nutritionists said.

Lung cancer is one of the most serious types of cancer to be diagnosed, said the NHS.

There are usually no signs or symptoms of the disease during its early phases.

But, as the tumour develops, it can lead to a persistent cough, coughing up blood, and having unexplained tiredness.

You should speak to a GP if you develop any signs of lung cancer, as the earlier its diagnosed, the better.

The condition mainly affects older people, and over 85 per cent of all cases are linked to smoking.

While eating avocados and following a healthy diet could lower your chance of lung cancer, smoking drastically raises your risk of the disease.
