Mission

The UAB Lung Health Center is committed to performing research that will benefit our patients and community, as well as furthering knowledge about mechanisms, therapies and behaviors that impact lung disease and its care, educating our patients and the public about lung disease, as well as enhancing the training of future specialists in pulmonary and critical care medicine and engaging in patient care initiatives of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine utilizing state-of-the-art, evidence-based disease management approaches.

Objectives

UAB Lung Health Center physicians, academic scientists, nurses, and health educators collaborate with faculty in other UAB Departments, divisions, and schools to conduct research protocols, provide recruitment services, and collaborate in various clinical research programs.

About Our Practice

Under the leadership of Dr. Mark Dransfield, the Center's Medical Director, and Dr. J. Edwin Blalock, the Center's Scientific Director, the LHC includes a large, diverse group of clinical research coordinators, physicians, clinical research nurses, recruitment and retention specialists, respiratory therapists, health educators, health behaviorists, medical sociologists, statisticians, and an epidemiologist. Each LHC clinical facility is equipped with pulmonary function laboratories, collection and storage capabilities for blood and saliva samples, and collection and storage capabilities for exhaled breath condensate and nitric oxide measurements.

Clinical Programs

UAB Pulmonary Services provides comprehensive treatment of medical conditions involving the lungs. It is part of our nationally recognized Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine, which focuses on respiratory, pulmonary vascular, and allergic disorders. UAB Pulmonary Services offers the latest and most technologically advanced procedures, including lung transplants and ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation). Our highly trained physicians work with general practitioners and specialists from other fields to collaborate on the diagnosis and treatment of such lung diseases as cystic fibrosis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and lung cancer. We also treat patients with sleep disorders.

UAB Pulmonary Services is ranked among the best programs of its kind in the nation, and our physicians are consistently listed among the Best Doctors in America for respiratory disease. Most UAB Pulmonary Services doctors are triple board-certified in internal medicine, critical care, and pulmonary medicine. They serve on national boards and specialty organizations, speak at national conferences, publish in scientific and medical journals, and help conduct research that is recognized nationally and internationally. Our physicians are continually seeking new ways to treat lung disease and improve the techniques and care for transplant patients while contributing to the body of knowledge about lung disease. We have the only nationally accredited Sleep Medicine Fellowship Training Program in the state of Alabama.

Many UAB Pulmonary Services physicians carry out research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to gain a better understanding of lung disease and its treatments or help turn new discoveries into therapies. Our physicians have served as presidents of many national societies, including the American College of Chest Physicians, the Association of Subspecialty Professors, and the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors. The excellence of our clinical and research programs has been recognized with our membership in the NIH-funded COPD and IPF Clinical Research networks (COPDnet and IPFnet, respectively), as well as the American Lung Association's Asthma Clinical Research Network and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Therapeutics Development Network.
