This is called active surveillance. If the cancer is more serious, treatments can include surgery to remove the prostate, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, or freezing the cancer cells (cryotherapy).     It comes after the 82-year-old was admitted to hospital last week for the investigation of a "prostate nodule", news which, at the time, raised few eyebrows as doctors planned to conduct "further evaluation".

    Officials confirmed today that the anomaly was grade 5 prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 9 that had metastasised to the ex Commander-in-Chief's bones. He and his family, the statement added, are now considering treatment options.

    A number of high profile politicians have sent well wishes to Mr Biden and his family including Donald Trump who has wished Joe Biden a "fast and successful recovery". In an uncharacteristically short post to his Truth Social platform this evening he wrote: "Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden's recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery."

    Prostate cancer expert Dr. Chris George of Northwestern Medicine, who is not treating President Biden, suggests that with a good response to therapy, the president could live for several years with effective disease management.

    The shock diagnosis comes after Mr Biden was declared "healthy" in February 2024 following his annual physical examination. Though his physician declared him "fit to serve" last year the former president's decline during his final year in office stirred concern both publicly and privately.
