Treatment and prognosis of solid and cystic brain metastases | CMAR - Dove Medical Press

Image
Introduction Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death throughout the world. 1 Brain metastasis (BM), the most common intracranial tumor, manifests in 10–20% of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) at diagnosis. 2,3 Approximately 30–50% of patients with NSCLC develop BM during their disease course. 4 Patients with BM commonly have poor prognosis, and untreated patients have a median survival of just 1–2 months. 5 Whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) increases the median survival to 4–6 months. 6 The development of treatments for BM, including surgery, WBRT, stereotactic radiotherapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy, has greatly extended the survival of patients with BM. 7 Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a new treatment method applied in select conditions of relatively oligometastasis (five or fewer BMs). 8 Cystic BM is uncommon, and cystic brain lesions are often deemed unsuitable for radiation, because of cystic lesions' insensitivity to radiothera...

Lung Cancer Will Never Define Me: My Story - Healthline

I never could've imagined where my diagnosis with stage 4 EGFR-positive lung cancer would lead. Oh, the things I've experienced, the places I've gone, and the people I've met. Since my diagnosis, I've experienced some of the toughest challenges of my life. I've had a collapsed lung and five brain metastases. I've had a craniotomy to remove a brain tumor, multiple radiation treatments, tumor ablation (back surgery), and multiple procedures on my lungs. I've participated in a clinical trial and tried multiple targeted cancer therapies. I've also traveled across the United States to lung cancer conferences and patient advocacy groups. And I've befriended some of the toughest and smartest medical professionals and fiercest cancer fighters I know — who I call my lung cancer brothers and sisters — on my journey to advocating for all of us. In summer 2016, after experiencing breathing spasms, tightness, and chest pain, I knew that something was wrong. I...

After reading this learning article, you should be able to: Prostate cancer is the fourth most diagnosed cancer worldwide, representing 7.3% of all new cases, preceded only by breast, lung and colorectal cancer [1] . In 2017, there were around 48,600 new cases of prostate cancer in the UK, making it the most common cancer in men, and data also show that it represents 26% of all new cancers in males [2,3] . Incidence rates in the UK are projected to rise by 12% by 2035 to 233 cases per 100,000 males [2] . This can be attributed to lifestyle changes, such as diet and decrease in UV exposure linked with vitamin D deficiency, but also to a better understanding and use of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) as a screening tool [4] . Artificial intelligence can help diagnose skin cancer, but only on white skin - Massive Science

When people see a dermatologist, they are normally concerned about some kind of area of disease on the skin — especially an area that looks suspiciously cancerous. The doctor will examine the area and, in some cases, will take a biopsy to determine what type of disease it is (if any). Armed with this newfound information, dermatologists are left to determine how best to proceed. However, this process is not as efficient as it might seem.  In the dermatology field, there is a persistent disconnect between the diagnosis of what a skin disease is and how it is managed . This can sometimes occur when diagnoses are incorrect, which prompts dermatologists to suggest an incorrect course of action for managing the disease. However, even if the diagnosis is correct, what, if any, clinical management steps are taken next are left up to the doctor. For example, if someone is diagnosed with skin cancer, doctors might order a clinical follow-up to confirm the diagnosis, they might plan ...
